She wiped at the tears and wiped again trying to maintain a brave front. The fountain would not be thwarted, and free fell down her cheeks. A Kleenex appeared in her line of vision, and she accepted it and just sobbed. There was not another sound in the room; each of the 250-pound plus, hardened men would rather face an armed mob than one crying woman, she realized from the absence of speech or movement.
After a few minutes, she dabbed her eyes and inhaled. Looking up, she saw all ten eyes trained on her, but attempting to look nonchalant about it.
âGuys, Iâm okay .... I just need to ....â She inhaled.
âGrieve ...,â Jonathan said harshly, âgrieve your friend. We can do this in the morning.â
âNo, Iâm okay. What questions do you have?â
âWe understood everything but the part about the corner puzzle piece; do you have any idea what it means?â The Professor prodded.
âYes. The corner of the puzzle refers to that coveted piece we would fight over when we did large jigsaw puzzles. We always said it was the best piece to start with. Everything could build from a corner. It was just our thing.â
âOkay, and the rest.â He pressed further.
âA couple of Christmas breaks ago, we snuck into the library on campus. I never asked how, because I was so scared. But I just wanted to do something bad ... or at the very least semi-dangerous, and that is the worst thing we could come up with on such short notice. There was an old movie reel copy of Rebel without a Cause. We watched it on one of those old projectors where you had wind the tape around a reel. No one caught us, but it still made us both laugh and giggle, thinking we had gotten one over on the establishment. And on the way home, he made a comment about how I was a rebel with a cause ... trying to get rid ofââ She inclined her head towards Jonathan.
âI was not that bad,â Jonathan complained.
âNo, just a bit overprotective, and I was at that ornery age then.â
He shook his head at her, and for the first time that day, she almost felt like smiling.
âSo, we need to find that film,â Trent interjected.
âI think so,â she shrugged. âI have no idea if it is still in storage there or not.â
âIâll go,â said Greg.
âPlease be careful,â Zoya said, grabbing his hand as he passed. âSeriously, I canât afford to lose any more friends today.â
âI donât plan on getting caught.â He smiled down at her and patted the back of her hand. Before she could retort, he was out the door.
âWhy donât I give you a tour,â Jonathan said softly, indicating the new digs.
âHow long do you think he will be?â
âDepends ... campus is a twenty-minute drive across town this time of day. Then he will just need to navigate his way around. You have time for a soak in the tub, workout, or food before he could be back.
